1. Ludovic-Napoléon, Vicomte Lepic (1839-1889) Ce qui Restait du Puissant Guillaume de Naillac (The Remains of the Noble William of Naillac)
Etching, 1861, from Croquis Hollandais et Autres, 236 x 159 mm., Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire 12. Very fine, rich impression on chine volant with full margins, signed in blue pencil.
Guillaume de Naillac, Lord of Naillac and Gargilesse from 1238 to 1266, was buried in the village of Gargilesse-Dampierre in central France. At some time, and apparently in the sight of Lepic, his tomb was opened, and Lepic recorded in etching the contents. Scribbled into the print are Guillaume’s many honorifics (Prince de Soyons, Chevalier d’Ordre du Roi, Grand Maître de l’Artillerie, etc.) perhaps a somewhat less than subtle reminder of the vanity of worldly titles.
