22. Odilon Redon (1840-1916) Félinerie
Lithograph, 1879, from Dans la Rêve, 269 x 202 mm., Mellerio 33. A fine impression on chine-applique with large margin ; two small, pale spots of foxing and a tiny surface abrasion on the letterpress text. The bizarre image is itself typically enigmatic. Redon’s title does not appear to be a dictionary word, but clearly seems to imply things having to do with cats: slyness, stealth, etc. We might then reason that whatever this homunculus is saying, it is to be taken not as truth but as self interest masquerading as truth. The work is also known in the literature as “Mephisto,” and while the innocent-looking listener does not in the least resemble Dr. Faustus, the Devil may appear to many different individuals on different occasions -- but invariably with some sly proposition. This is one of the rarer Redon prints, the only edition being limited to 25 impressions. |
