<TD VALIGN="top"><B>41. Ferdinand Staeger <BR>(1880-1976)</B><BR><I>Forest Scene </I><BR><BR><FONT SIZE="-1">Etching, ca. 1920, 193 x 128 mm. Very fine impression with a small remarque on chine-appliqué with large margins, inscribed “probedruck” (trial proof), signed and with a further inscription in pencil. Staeger was a Moravian-born German artist whose work frequently took its subject from music, theater or literature. In style, he was totally a realist, but there is almost always a kind of fairytale atmosphere in his highly detailed depictions and the term “mystic realism” was coined to describe his work. Even in this small, un-referenced work all this is evident.
