43. Robert Braun (20th Century) The Release of Force: Survivors
Original drawing in black chalk with white heightening on green paper, ca. 1975, signed, 259 x 203 mm. We have not been able to find virtually any information on the American artist Robert Braun, despite the fact that this drawing was reproduced in Drawing magazine, in Vol. II, No. 1, some years ago. Clearly, the work stems from the genre of science fiction, a literary field that produced much fine writing and and the occasional masterpiece, but whose graphic art has perhaps not been studied enough – if at all. One would infer from this drawing that its subject is a man suffering from the effects of atomic (or perhaps other) force. Not a pleasing thought, nor a pleasing picture, with its distortions of recognizably human features, but extraordinarily well drawn and clearly powerful. As many works in the past have proved, fine art need not be shudder-free. |
