47. Jean Veber (1864-1928) “Ah! Qu’il fait chaud" ("Whew ! It’s hot")
Original drawing in brush and ink and watercolor on thick, tan wove paper, signed in ink, 233 x 303 mm. The inimitable Veber (an especially horrifying drawing by him is listed previously in this show) is here both grotesque and funny at the same time. The image was probably drawn for magazine publication and one should note how the artist cropped it, to put full attention on the separated head and body. Veber, like his great predecessors Daumier, Traviès, Grandville and Philipon, could attack and could shock, but could also amuse. A wonderful drawing. |
