Etching and engraving, 1745, 373 x 270 mm., Portalis & Béraldi III p. 576, LeBlanc 27 (as Pierre Louis Surugue). A very good, detailed impression on thick laid paper with small margins; the paper yellowed within the platemark, skinning and tiny holes visible verso. The subject is perfectly clear and straightforward, a “vanity” in the conventional (and sinful) meaning of that term. But the appearance of such an image in the perpetually beautiful and youthful world of mid-eighteenth-century art in France is rather a bizarre occurrence in itself. The yellowing of the paper only seems to add to the effect. An uncommon (in more ways than one) print. |
