54. Johannes Sadeler I (1550-1600) after Dirk Barendsz (1534-1592) Ita Erit et Aventus Filii Hominis (Mankind Awaiting the Last Judgment)
Engraving, 1580-84, 358 x 454 mm., The Illustrated Bartsch 229 iii/iii, Hollstein 265, LeBlanc 137. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on the borderline, in a few places barely within, but complete and with the full text and lower plate margin. It is an elegant and musical banquet of lovers, “and they suspected nothing” (Mathew 24.39). Through the windows one sees war and destruction. Past the end of the wall at the right, Christ appears in the sky to render judgment, and souls are lofted to heaven or, despairing, pushed into the flames of hell. No one is ready. No one is ready! It is the ultimate human contradiction, the epitome of the incomprehensible and the bizarre. |
