Visscher, A Mouse in a Mouse Trap

A Mouse in a Mouse Trap

Engraving, 140 x 193 mm., Le Blanc 149, Wurzbach 154. A fine impression on laid paper with narrow margins; very slight foxing in the upper margin. The image shows a close-up scene of a young man and woman having trapped a mouse in a cage. The print effectively exploits the idea of lighting a night scene by candlelight and shows the very different ends to which the engraving technique could be exploited. Visscher was a professional and prolific etcher and engraver of every sort of subject, but it was always his genre prints that were particularly prized by collectors.
