The Old King

Lithograph, 1922, from Fredericus Rex, Portfolio II, King Frederick and His Circle, on heavy wove paper with full margins, 308 x 254 mm., Müller 640 i/ii, signed in pencil and with the stamp verso “Erster Verstand.” Corinth’s portrayal of Frederick the Great of Prussia was one of the major projects of his late style, comprising no less than 45 signed color lithographs issued in two portfolios in an edition of 100. The complete set is rarely seen and has brought in the six figures at auction. Black and white impressions, such as the present one, are proofs before the edition. Corinth began his career as a rather academic artist, then incorporated elements of impressionism and, after a stroke in 1911 left him essentially paralyzed on his left side, his work began to show aspects of German Expressionism. Although commercially successful even in his earlier years, his late works, with their free and fluent draughtsmanship, are far more vividly interesting.
