Callow, Bologna

Bologna

Original drawing in pencil on blue grey wove paper, inscribed and dated May 4, 1892, 250 x 176 mm. The view is similar to the well-known Bonington etching, with the leaning tower in the background and, in style, Callow was the direct artistic descendant of Bonington and Boys. At the age of eighty, and living outside London, he made his last trip to Italy in 1892. Other drawings by him are known of similar subjects and similarly inscribed and show the same careful notation of small architectural details embedded in a pleasing composition.
