Japonisme (complete set)

Etchings with drypoint and aquatint, 1885, Bourcard/Goodfriend 11-20 (11 iii/iii, 12 iv/iv, 13 iii/iv, 14 iii/iii, 15 undescribed with number but before title, 16 iii/iii, 17 ii/iii, 18 iii/iv, 19 only, 20 ii/iii), edition 150. Very fine, sharp impressions in black and colors on laid paper with full margins, in a brown paper folder with second impressions (in black) of B/G 11 and 20 on the front and back; the folder split and with tears and losses around the edges not affecting the images, B. 11 with some paper discoloration, the others in fresh condition. The portfolio is numbered 46 and is one of 100 on this paper plus 50 on japan. B/G 11 was actually etched by Henri Guérard, after Japanese drawings, as a cover and title page for the album. Buhot's own plates were etched at different times between 1874 and 1885. The album is one of the landmarks in graphic art of the Japonisme movement in France, for it not merely reproduced Japanese art objects but delved into and experimented with Japanese aesthetics. 'Japonism,' wrote the critic Philippe Burty in 1887 about Buhot, 'has never had a more intelligent or exact interpreter.' Japonisme: Titre, etching by Henri Guérard, printed in red, 260 x 178 mm.
