Anon. German, Three Soldiers

Three Soldiers with Fife, Drum and Flag

Engraving, 149 x 160 mm, Passavant IV-287-22. Brilliant impression on laid paper, trimmed on the platemark, which is visible in places; the lower left corner, mostly blank, restored. Passavant, who seems to have been the only one to have catalogued the print, calls it an etched copy after a niello (Duchesne 277) although it is apparently neither etched nor a copy. The lines are clearly engraved and the subject is Germanic, highly unlikely for a niello. There is another impression in the Bibliothèque National, Paris.
