The Death of the Virgin

Woodcut, 1510, from The Life of the Virgin, 289 x 204 mm., Bartsch 93, Meder 205 b before text. Very fine proof impression before the 1511 edition, on laid paper with the watermark of a Bull’s Head with Flower and Cross (Meder 66), trimmed on the borderline, just within it at the top left, otherwise in fine, fresh condition. Proof impressions of this series are rare, but they are immeasurably superior in clarity and crispness to impressions of or after the published states.
