Cattle and Sheep with a Herdsman

Red chalk counterproof, 195 x 298 mm., signed in brown ink. Provenance: Adolf Gluenstein (Lugt 123); Leopold Heinemann, Berlin (not in L.). Finely done, complete compositional study, the central area finished, the sides in open sketch, on laid paper with the watermark of an imperial eagle, signed in full. For a comparable drawing and signature see Deutsche Maler und Zeichner der 17 Jh., plate 180. The combination of finished and sketchy work is also present on that sheet. Roos was born in Germany, studied in Holland, and traveled in Italy from about 1650 to 1656, after which he returned to Germany where he became Court Painter to the Prince Palatine. Widely praised, he was especially noted for his animal studies and his many etchings of animal subjects (see Bartsch, Vol. 1) have been collected for centuries.
