Portrait Study: Miss Charlotte R. Williams
Lithograph, 1892, 160 x 65 mm., Way 149, Levy 76, Spink/Chicago 58 conjectured ii/ii. Fine impression on chine-appliqué with good margins; pale glue stains in the upper right corner of the chine (away from the image) and in places on the support sheet. The impression clearly bears a lithographically-printed butterfly signature. Spink/Chicago, note 5, mention such impressions as a conjectured second state. First state impressions have either no signature or one hand drawn in lithographic crayon, but this butterfly is clearly different from the illustrated hand-drawn one. Impressions (unknown number) were printed for Whistler in Paris by Lemercier, who presumably erased the stone afterwards. There seem to be no posthumous impressions and the print is not commonly seen.
