Notre-Dame de Chartres

Etching and drypoint, 1913, 418 x 286 mm., Delteil 112 v/v. Fine impression on laid paper with large margins, signed and numbered in pencil from the edition of 85 plus 4 proofs. Leheutre was something of a phenomenon in French etching, having been given a volume to himself in Delteil’s Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré, alongside such as Corot, Daubigny, Meryon and Goya, well before his career was concluded. Today, with only a single exception, his etchings and drypoints are thought of as charming but minor contributions to the history of original print making in France. That exception is this print, his most prestigious print and probably his best, architecturally solid and yet with a lightness of touch and line that raises it far above the usual depictions of churches which, for a time, flooded the market. It has always brought a price at auction well in excess of that of his other prints and it continues to do so.
