Dictionnaire des Graveurs Anciens et Modernes Seconde Édition, Paris, 1789, 2 volumes, 202 x 132 mm., ex collections : H. Fürstenberg Hofbibliothek (this stamp not in Lugt) ; J. A. Boerner, 1832 (Lugt 269). A fine copy of this famous tome in contemporary full leather bindings and in good condition. In addition to the wealth of information offered here to the 18th century collector, the Basan Dictionary is known for including many original etchings and engravings, including Rembrandt’s “Pancake Woman” (Nowell-Usticke 124 iv/v) and works by Della Bella, Callot, Castiglione, Cochin, Dassonville, Eisen, Hollar, van Laer, van Ostade, van Vliet, Waterloo, Weirotter and many others. In this copy some of the prints (including the Rembrandt) are trimmed on the plate mark and laid down to the page while others are printed directly onto the page. There appears to be no difference in the quality of impression.
