Vaux-Hall

Hand-colored etching and aquatint, 1785, 538 x 773 mm., ex collection: Henry Hecht (not in Lugt). This most famous picture of an eighteenth-century London musical garden is universally referred to as Rowlandson's although, in fact, it was etched and aquatinted by two other artists after Rowlandson’s design (and, presumably, under his direction). A fine impression, printed in brown ink on laid paper, probably just after the turn of the century, with fine, restrained hand coloring; good margins, the outer edges folded back for framing, three small printer's creases touched in, a few edge tears, light foxing and time staining. Among the individuals identified in the image are the singer Mrs. Weichsell, the oboist Johann Fischer, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Devonshire, Admiral Paisley and, in the dining alcove, Dr. Johnson, Samuel Boswell and Oliver Goldsmith (who actually had died eleven years before the print was made). Impressions of this print have become exceedingly scarce.
