La Mort de Matamore

La Mort de Matamore (Capitaine Fracasse) (The Death of Matamore, a scene from Théophile Gautier's "Le Capitaine Fracasse,"1861-63

Etching, 1864, 178 x 235 mm., Béraldi 177 iv/iv, B. N. Inv. 177 iv/v. Fine impression in dark brown ink, with plate tone, on Aqua Fortistes laid paper with full, large margins and bearing the blind stamp of Cadart & Luquet; some spots of pale foxing and light soiling in the margins. It was published by the Societé des Aquafortistes in April, 1864. The work is not a book illustration, but rather a literary evocation which, perhaps, came as something of a surprise to admirers of Bracquemond's naturalistic depictions and Japonisme style.
