English Landscape with Trees and a Large Church

Pencil, black chalk, ink, wash and white gouache, 1851, 179 x 263 mm. Fine, complex and finished sketch on grey-brown paper with white heightening, inscribed almost illegibly with the location( “from Dru…ery…”), signed with initials and dated 1851. The foliage is drawn in Haden's best later manner (compare the etchings, Schneiderman 28 and 29 from 1859) and the architecture is precise and telling. Only a malformed seated cow shows any weakness in Haden's draughtsmanship. Drawings by Haden after his return from Italy (1844) and his first serious etchings (1857-58) are extremely rare. Schneiderman mentions a sketch of Cader Idris in the NYPL as "the first work by Haden since his Italian work that has survived." It too must date from the later 1840s or early 50s.
