Doré: Paons (Peacocks)

Paons (Peacocks)

Lithograph, 1854, from La Ménagerie Parisienne, 230 x 295 mm., Béraldi 67, No. 6, B. N. Inv. 192, No. 6. The boxes of the theater, filled to overflowing with female fashion-plates (not a man in sight), posing, conversing, checking each other out, anything but watching the stage. No wonder Doré’s menagerie categorizes them as peacocks (the feminine “peahen” just doesn’t have the same bite)! The Ménagerie was Doré’s attempt to represent Parisian society, both high and low, in animalistic terms, running the gamut from lions to toads. A fine impression on white wove paper with good margins
