Earlom, A Fruit Piece

A Fruit Piece

Mezzotint, 1776, 305 x 353 mm., Wessely 148 only state, Dunthorne N.D. A good impression on laid paper with small margins; old repaired edge tears, two going into the image at the top, and staining and a small abrasion at the lower plate mark. Despite the title, the work should not be confused with Earlom’s famous flower and fruit prints after Jan van Huysum. This is a single plate, not one of a pair, after a 17th century Roman painting which, so the plate inscription informs us, hung “in the Marble Parlour at Houghton,” Houghton Hall is one of the stately homes in Norfolk, England and was built originally for the British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Campidoglio’s painting was presumably there during his residence.
