Sketch: Grand Rue, Dieppe

Lithograph, 1891(?), 75 x 130 mm., Way 146a; Levy 59; Spink/Chicago Art Institute 44a. A fine, clear proof impression on laid china paper, different from other known proofs and from the edition, with good margins; the corner tips of the sheet ragged. Like many of Whistler's lithographs, it was drawn on transfer paper rather than directly on the stone, and was not transferred to the stone until 1904, after Whistler's death. This is a rare proof impression taken that year, before later publication. The edition, printed after transfer to a second stone, and including the print Interior (Way 146b) on the same stone, was of fifty impressions on cream wove paper and included in the deluxe edition of Way's "Memories of James McNeill Whistler."
