Le Reposoir du Saint Sacrement

Etching, ca. 1648, De Vesme/Massar 73 iii/viii, 335 x 476 mm. A very fine, sharp and early impression, before any address and before the diagonal stroke on the hill, on laid paper with thread margins virtually all around; a few soft vertical creases, the very tip (outside the image) of the upper left corner restored, and a pale hair line on the plate. The overall appearance is striking with superb detail. The image of the print is the Corpus Christi Day celebration on June 12, 1648 in Paris, for which Queen Anne had ordered a special altar to be erected in the first court of the Palais Royale and had placed there the most beautiful tapestries and ornaments. Louis XIV, here aged nine-and-a-half, is depicted with the Queen. One of Della Bella’s largest prints and a superb example of seventeenth-century Florentine etching.
