Les Trois Sultanes

Etching, 112 x 152 mm., Bocher 231. This charming little print is not generally recognized as a theatrical subject. However, it represents a scene from Soliman Second ou les Trois Sultanes, a comedy by Charles Simon Favart (1710-1792) with music by Paul-César Gibert, first performed at the Comédie-Italienne, Paris in 1761. The work was famous in its time and performed internationally, far more for Favart’s comedy than for Gibert’s music. Fine impression on laid paper trimmed inside the platemark but with ample white space around the image. The title is inscribed by hand in brown ink.
