The Goldsmith

Etching and drypoint, 1655, 77 x 57 mm., Bartsch 123 ii/ii, Hind 285 ii/ii, Nowell-Usticke 123 ii/iii, ex collection: possibly C. G. Tessin (Lugt 2985). Fine, harmonious but posthumous impression, with the fine, vertical shading along the lowest beam at the right, and probably from a Basan edition, on fairly thin laid paper with good margins. Impressions of the first state can be quite dark, but this later state retains all the fine lines and a good range of contrasting tones. Once again, after such printing as this, the plate wore and weakened and was coarsely retouched and re-bitten to poor effect.
