American Bog Plants

Aquatint, stipple, engraving and etching printed in color with additional hand coloring, 1806, 536 x 419 mm., Dunthorne p. 250 ii/ii, from Dr. Thornton's The Temple of Flora. A fine impression, the colors, blues and browns, subtle but fresh, on thick wove paper with the watermark E. & P. 1801. No platemark is visible but there is ample blank plate margin around the image and text; slight discoloration of the paper visible in the margins. The three plants pictured are the Fetid Pothos, Pitcher Plant, and Venus's Flytrap. This image shares the surrealist quality of many of the Thornton prints: the plants themselves dwarf the habitat and appear to exist in world devoid of human life.
