Les Saules des Mottiaux (The Willows of Les Mottiaux)

Etching and drypoint, 1868, 205 x 295 mm., Béraldi 190 iii/iii, B. N. Inv. 222. Brilliant impression on thick laid paper with good margins, signed in ink; a few very pale spots of foxing in the margins. This is one of Bracquemond's infrequent pure landscapes, beautifully observed, drawn and etched in a style not quite like anyone else. The scene may have attracted him because the trees, for the most part, are growing out of standing water, with boats moored to their trunks. A small fishing shack (à la Rembrandt) is half hidden behind the trees.
