Music in the Salon

Original drawing in brown ink and wash and white gouache over pencil, 249 x 221 mm. Fine, finished drawing on wove paper, signed in full in brown ink at the bottom right. Such intimate domestic scenes, frequently incorporating musical performances, were popular subjects for Devéria as well as for his audience. A successful painter, lithographer and illustrator, he was probably best known for his portraits of famous artists and writers and also, interestingly, for pornographic images. There are many roads to artistic success.
