Don Quixote Telling His Story to the Peasants

Watercolor, 1859, 230 X 195 mm, signed and dated. Clement-Auguste is not the Andrieux who was the student of Delacroix and whose drawings are often confused with the latter's. Nevertheless, this masterly work amply shows the incredibly high level of watercolor painting in France in the nineteenth century. It may have been intended to illustrate an edition of Cervantes' Don Quixote.
