Heroic Landscape in the Style of Poussin

Etching, 1744, Link 151 ii/iv, 144 x 186 mm., ex collections: Frans Baumgartner (Lugt 975 and 2900), and S. Wagner (L. 2380). A very fine impression before the number on laid paper with narrow margins. Dietrich was one of the best German etchers of the eighteenth century. In landscape, he was well aware of the accomplishments of his great predecessors and a number of his works are essentially tributes to Everdingen, Poelenburgh, Rembrandt, Rosa and others. This is his tribute to Poussin: trees, mountains, running water, classically garbed figures, but the building on the hilltop is a church rather than a classical pagan temple.
