L'Eclipse (The Eclipse)

Etching, 1869, 197 x 129 mm., Béraldi 435 iii/iii, B. N. Inv. 282. A fine impression on brownish laid paper with large margins, as published in Sonnets et Eaux-Fortes, Lemerre, 1869, to accompany the sonnet L'Eclipse by Auguste Vacquerie. The volume was a highly unusual experiment in publishing, pairing the poetry of both great and lesser literary figures with etchings by some of the major figures in the graphic world of the time: Bracquemond, Corot, Daubigny, Manet, Lalanne, Haden, Millet and others. There were forty-two sonnets and as many etchings and the work was issued in an edition of 350. It was sold out within eight days and most copies, if not safe in libraries, have since been broken up.
