Etching, 1921, Zigrosser 134, 176 x 227 mm. Unusually fine and fresh impression with varied plate tone, from the 1924 New Republic
Portfolio issued in an edition of about 250, on tan wove paper with full margins and signed in pencil. There was a 1921 edition of 30 on Whatman paper. The New Republic impressions were printed by Peter Platt from the steel-faced plate and though the projected edition of the portfolio was 500, Marin's contribution was divided between this plate and Brooklyn Bridge and Lower New York (Z. 106), with the portfolios containing one or the other. The now-famous image clearly shows the dynamism of Marin's later style, ten or eleven years after the last of his Whistlerian plates. It is unusual to find this print in such fresh condition as many of the New Republic portfolios were not well conserved.
