The Prodigal Son Putting On Superb Vestments
Engraving, from L’Enfant Prodigue (plate 5), Blum 1188 only state, 259 x 326 mm., ex collections: Alfred Morrison (Lugt 151); Cleveland Museum of Art – duplicate (L. 449c).
Superb impression, still showing the guidelines for the text, on thin laid paper with a fragment of a watermark, trimmed on or along the platemark, which is visible in places on all sides and in fresh, unwashed condition. The scene occurs after the return of the prodigal in rags to his father’s house, where he is welcomed with joy and given splendid clothing to wear, while the fatted calf is slaughtered for a ceremonial dinner. The calf, already slaughtered, is pictured here in a tiny background detail at the right.
