Hamilton: Feeding the Sparrows

Feeding the Sparrows

Etching and drypoint, 1890, 450 x 301 mm. An excellent impression on thick, laid paper with full margins; a few small, pale spots of foxing. Hamilton Hamilton (shades of Major Major Major Major) was born in Oxford, England and was of Scottish descent. Brought to America as a child, he was largely self taught as an artist although there are vague references to his studying in England, France and New York. While his brand of sweet sentimentalism (typical of the times) has little to do with the world today, every once in a while an image, like this one, sticks in the mind (or in the craw) and says, “Well, why not? Sparrows, snow, a little girl!” Merry Christmas!
