Matinée d’Hiver au Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu (Winter Afternoon on the Quay of the Charity Hospital)

Etching, drypoint, roulette and stop-out, 1876, B/G 123 xi/xv, 236 x 318 mm. Superb impression of the rare and most desirable state of the plate with the full panoply of sketches in the lower plate margin, on good quality wove paper with good margins, signed with a lightly printed red owl stamp; slight paper discoloration in the area of the old mat opening in the margins just outside the image. After the plate became worn from printings of the published states, Buhot reclaimed it and completely reworked it, changing the angle of the sidewalk at the left and adding many new subtle details. At one point in this constant reworking, he added (and afterward erased) the panel of sketches, which comment on the main image and add a further element of interest to the print. The atmosphere has become, if anything, even colder and gloomier than in the previous states but the image, somehow, even more appealing.
