Festtage in Amsterdam

Color lithograph, 1898, Glöckner Galerie (1980) 15, 217 x 199 mm. Fine, fresh impression on thin laid paper with good margins, signed in pencil; a few very pale spots of foxing or staining in the right margin. The scene is a street corner on a national holiday in September, 1898, the holiday flag contrasting with the constant flowers and the outdoor rack of clothing for sale. Orlik, born in Prague became a teacher and major artistic figure in Berlin, but travelled extensively, even to Japan where he learned Japanese techniques of color woodcuts. The present work predates that distant voyage and uses sophisticated lithographic methods to replicate the appearance of a color crayon drawing. A scarce, early work.
