The Peasants' Brawl

Engraving, ca. 1546, 47 x 72 mm., Bartsch 165, Pauli 176 ii/ii. Fine impression on laid paper with partial thread margins or trimmed on the platemark, about a millimeter into the image at the right; a few small nicks at the bottom. This is not a plate from the set of The Peasant Wedding or The Twelve Months, but a completely different rendering of the scene issued as a single print. The legend translates as "If you hit me, I'll stick you," and the poor woman at the center attempts to separate the drunken combatants before any serious damage is done. The impression is darker than that of the British Museum reproduced in The Illustrated Bartsch and the print is scarce.
