Hardouin de Beaumont de Péréfixe

Engraving, 1663, 359 x 282 mm., Robert-Dumesnil 22 ii/iii, Petitjean & Wickert 192 ii/iii. Very fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on the plate mark, which is visible in places, but always with a white border around the subject. Hardouin (1606-1671) was a French historian and clergyman. He was Bishop of Rodez, then Archbishop of Paris, and Preceptor and confessor to Louis XIV. Nanteuil’s engraving technique was stunning and his prints were widely collected simply on the basis of their technical virtuosity. But he was a true portraitist and his technique served him to reveal the personalities, often grim, of the highly-placed individuals who controlled France in his time.
