Peacock amid East-Indian Foliage

Lithograph in two colors, 1895, Rijksprentenkabinet (Hoytema) 55 ii/iii, 179 x 313 mm. Fine proof impression before the letterpress signature and publication in De Kroniek, on cream wove paper with large, full margins. Hoytema was an important and unusual figure in Dutch modernism, combining the subject matter of birds, animals and plants with an Art Nouveau style and aesthetic. In keeping with that aesthetic, much of his work was in the form of calendars, book and magazine design and illustration and posters, the kind of “everyday things” that Art Nouveau enhanced with art. Hoytema is well known in Holland, unknown or undervalued here.
