Lucioni: Barn in the Hills

Barn in the Hills

Etching, 1966, 118 x 169 mm. Fine impression in black-brown on thick, white, wove paper with full margins, signed and dated in pencil from an edition of 150; old tape at the top corners of the sheet. Few graphic artists have expressed rural New England more convincingly than Lucioni, who was born in Malnate, Italy, studied in New York at Cooper Union and later with William Auerbach-Levy, worked mainly in New York City and may not have seen Vermont until he was a grown man. The charm of his etchings comes first from his precise and meticulous draughtsmanship and second from his appreciation of the range of light, no simple chiaroscuro but minute differences of intensity. This, of course, is not dependent upon nationality of place or person.
