Concours de Dessin du Journal

Gillotype or other photo-mechanical process, 1897, 268 x 264 mm., Leroy-Crevecoeur 430, Fields p. 67 illustrated. Infrequently seen because, as a photo-mechanically produced image, it is not considered to be an “original print,” the work is fully representative of Auriol’s style, generally more concerned with Art Nouveau ornament than with representational images. One of Art Nouveau’s major thrusts was the application of artistic design to functional objects so, while Auriol created a few estimable original prints, his true impact came through such “commercial” projects as posters, menus, programs, greeting cards and diplomas where his exquisite taste created aesthetically pleasing objects from what would otherwise have been stolidity on the one hand, kitsch on the other.
