Lago d’Albano

Drawing in grey wash over touches of black chalk on laid paper watermarked with a bunch of grapes and the date 1778, 277 x 440 mm. This subtly-done and very capable drawing appears to be one of the rare landscapes to come from the Neo-Classical movement in Italy at the turn of the century. The seated traveler and his dog, done entirely in wash, show that feeling, but the whole drawing is cool and restrained, with no attempt at the picturesque, and the detail completely subjugated to the play of light and shade. The Lago d’Albano, once a volcano, now a lake, is southeast of Rome and is the site of Castel Gandolfo, the summer home of the popes. One might suggest the young Vicenzo Camuccini (1771-1844) as the author of the drawing, but there seems to be so little to compare it with that it may be better left as anonymous.
