Guilllaume de Brisacier

Engraving, 1664, 350 x 266 mm., Le Blanc 9 iv/iv, Robert-Dumesnil 15 iv/iv. Very fine impression on laid paper with an IHS watermark, with thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark; a few tiny surface scrapes in the outer areas. In the days when people avidly collected portrait engravings, this was one of the most famous and desirable of all, affectionately known as “the grey haired man.” It was indeed the virtuosic engraving of the hair (but also of the lace and other texures) that attracted collectors to the print. Institutions too, as there is probably not a single major museum print collection without it.
