Noah and the Animals Entering the Ark

Etching, 1650-55, Bartsch 1, Percy E-24, Bellini 61 only state, 205 x 401 mm. Fine, strong impression, the lightly-etched background at the left perfectly clear, on laid paper with narrow margins or trimmed on the plate mark, but always with white space outside the borderline. Influenced by Rembrandt etchings, Castiglione takes full advantage of contrasts of dark and light, the brilliant white flanks of the horse, the sheep and the urinating dog shining against the grey and black vegetation. In contrast to most representations of the subject, the emphasis is fully on the foreground figures moving from dark to light towards the barely delineated ark in the background.
