Peasants Resting in a Forest Grove

Original drawing in pen and black ink and grey wash with scratching-out on laid paper, ca. 1795, 203 x 286 mm., ex collection: Unidentified with an acquisition date of Nov., 1885. The drawing is not signed, but is inscribed with Morland’s name verso in several different hands. The subject, composition and figural types are all typical of his work. Morland was, above everything else, the artist of rural life in England. Whether it was animals, peasants, gypsies or the upper classes out for a picnic or day of shooting, Morand captured them in bucolic scenes with which almost every Englishman could identify. In close-ups he tended toward a sentimental prettification, but the larger vistas show a strength and honesty of depiction that is admirable. This superb drawing, rapidly limned, then finished in wash with scratched-out highlights, studies figures in sunlight and shade in a setting of rocks and old twisted trees.
