The Wine Taster

Watercolor over pencil on thin wove paper, 90 x 78 mm., signed in pencil Nice little colored sketch of a gentleman sitting in his wine cellar, amid casks and barrels, tasting a glass of wine. Altmann was a German genre painter who studied at the Dresden Academy and worked in Munich. The drawing has been incised for transfer, possibly for a print, although biographies do not suggest that he himself was a printmaker. Nagler’s Künstlerlexikon mentions that he was particularly admired for his watercolor drawings.
