Geritz: Mae Murray

Mae Murray

Woodcut, 1925, 177 x 152 mm. Fine, sharp impression on japan tissue with large margins, titled, dated and signed in pencil. Geritz, born in Budapest, Hungary, came to America with his family in 1909, lived for a time in Chicago, then moved to California. A member of both the California Society of Etchers and the California Printmakers, he was really drawn to woodcut and linocut, techniques in which he achieved mastery and which he taught to others. The fluidity of line in prints such as this is a quality not generally found in block prints. As to the subject, there are few people alive today old enough to remember the prime of the dancer and actress Mae Murray (1889-1965). At the height of her fame, in silent films in the Twenties, she was known as the girl with “the bee-stung lips.”
