Veduta del Porto di Ripa Grande

Etching, 1743, from Vedute di Roma, 400 x 610 mm., Hind 27 before i/vi. Superb impression of an unrecorded proof state, with the barge in the center (erased in the third state) and before the address of Bouchard (first state) and the author’s address and price (second state), on laid paper with large and presumably full margins; a trace of the usual center fold. One of Piranesi’s most action-packed images, the plate is swarming with figures loading and unloading ships and barges at the principal Roman harbor and quay. The two Doganas, or custom houses, are built into the quay, which is filled with observers of the action. An absolutely stunning print.
