Caricature Portrait of Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly

Lithograph, 1893, Vallotton & Goerg 35 ii/ii, 237 x 160 mm. Fine impression, one of only a few extant according to V & G, on white wove paper with good margins. Barbey d’Aurevilly (1811) was the author of fantastic and decadent novels, such as Les Diaboliques, Un Prêtre Marié, Une Vieille Maitresse and L’Ensorcelée, the last two of which were illustrated by Buhot. He was obviously one of Buhot’s favorite authors. Though not born in Valognes like Buhot, he had a house there and many of his works are based on Norman aristocracy and the ambience of the “dead city”of Valognes. The term ville morte at that time referred to a town from which business had fled and which had become the home of older people on fixed incomes, many of them poor gentry and living in the past. The portrait chargé here shows the author as something of a dandy, a reputation he held in life.
